Leros ISLAND

Leros Island: The Hidden Gem of the Aegean

Leros Island, shimmering like a hidden jewel in the blue waters of the Aegean Sea, is one of Greece's Dodecanese islands and has become an increasingly popular destination in recent years. Located very close to the Bodrum coast, Leros has managed to stay away from the tourist crowds. The island is full of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and a peaceful atmosphere. Its small yet rugged coastline offers many secluded coves, villages, and hidden corners waiting to be explored. For those seeking beautiful beaches, there's no need to search far; even the waters right off the road are stunning. Leros offers an unforgettable experience for both those looking for a peaceful holiday and those wanting to explore its history.

General Information About Leros Island

Leros is part of Greece's Dodecanese group. Located north of Kalymnos, across from Bodrum's Yalıkavak and Didim, and very close to Turkey’s Bodrum Peninsula, it remains relatively unknown, with few Turkish tourists visiting, even during holidays, except for those arriving by boat. The population of the island is close to 8,500. It has a very peaceful atmosphere, and as soon as you dock at the island by catamaran, you can feel the serenity and calm. Everywhere you turn, there is a cove or a beach. With an area of approximately 74 km², the island is known for its beautiful coves, historical castles, and traditional Greek architecture. Compared to the more crowded neighboring islands, it is quieter and more authentic. The ideal time to visit is between April and October to enjoy the mild and pleasant weather.

Must-Try Dishes: Grilled squid, grilled octopus, octopus salad, fresh fish varieties, fish soup, shrimp, fava, hummus, moussaka, tzatziki, zucchini flower stuffed with rice, wild Aegean herbs, and ouzo (the Greek version of raki).

Zorba Tavern in Pandeli Bay is one of the island's most famous restaurants, loved by Turkish sailors. However, it's recommended to skip it and try the nearby Tyzomas instead. If there's grilled mullet, be sure to try it! The only tavern in Bloufuti Bay serves delicious dishes that satisfy hungry bellies, especially when paired with ice-cold resin wine and crispy fried zucchini or grilled sardines. Chef Panagiotis Kastis returned to Leros after years abroad and transformed his grandfather's house into a traditional Greek restaurant named Pigadi. You'll fall in love with his lamb dishes, reflecting the expertise he gained abroad. If you get tired of mezze and seafood, Il Forno pizzeria in Alinda will make you very happy. Leros offers everything you'd expect from a typical Greek island, including turquoise waters and blue or white-painted wooden tables set by the sea that will enchant you.
